ROMANTICISM & REALISM

18TH CENTURY History

    1. * Death of Louis XIV in 1715 brought a resurgence of aristocratic life.
    2. French Revolution broke out in 1789 which brings about an interest in the Greek ideal of Liberty and Democracy. 
    3. * Napoleon saw himself as a new "Caesar", crowned in 1804.
    4. * Neoclassicism takes architectural hold in the U.S. with Thomas  Jefferson
    5. *New ways of thinking about the new world= USA
    6. Voltaire (1694-1778) = Science/Technological Improvement 
    7. Rousseau (1712-1778) = Nature alone must be society's guide/Social Contract
    8. *Exploitation and Environmental abuses of Industrial Revolution
    9. *Romanticism a reaction against the rigidity and intellectual nature of Neoclassical art- Artist want to evoke strong feelings and transmit their passions

*Neoclassical= head/mind=focus on motives for war & lofty patriotic ideas

*Romanticism = heart =focus on nature, social injustice & the exotic

*Realism = eye/ perception=focus on reality in front of artist

REALISM

 *Realism revolted against the exotic subject matter and exaggerated emotionalism and drama of the Romantic movement.

  *Portray real and typical contemporary people and situations with truth and accuracy,

*Realist works depicted people of all classes in situations that arise in ordinary life

*Many depictions reflected the changes brought by the industrial revolution

*Popularity of such 'realistic' works grew with the introduction of photography— a new visual source that created a desire for people to produce representations which look objectively real.
