Mannerism is notable for its intellectual sophistication as well as its artificial elements versus the Renaissance focus on  naturalistic qualities.Mannerism showcases compositional tension & instability rather than the balance and clarity of earlier Renaissance painting. 

Period from High Renaissance (1520) to Baroque (1590)

Name derived from the Italian "maniera" or "style" suggesting an artist's personal characteristic "touch" or recognizable "manner."
